What is "Spam" and How can I prevent it?

If you are getting unwanted advertising, it is usually because you have visited websites and left your e-mail address. Often, when you ask for downloads or when you order products, you will be asked to enter information such as your name and e-mail address. Avoid doing so. This information is sold, and you end up on many mailing lists.

Other times, spam just seems to arrive for no reason. Perhaps your e-mail address appears on a website somewhere and has been picked up by a program which hunts for addresses on the internet. Perhaps your address is in someone's address book, and that address book got hacked. There are many ways to get on a list. The bottom line: at this point, we all have to "Learn to enjoy the Delete button."

You can't prevent spam, but here are several things you can do to minimize it:

  • Establish a yahoo or hotmail account, and use that address when a website insists you give them an address. Spam will then go to that address.
  • Never try to write to a spammer and complain. That only lets them know that your address is "real," and they will give or sell your address to others.
  • Never click on the "Remove" link at the bottom of spam. Again, this only lets them know you are real.
  • Do not put your address on websites. Spammers use programs which search the internet for e-mail addresses.
